It was right there in front of me the whole time.
I was wondering how I could extend Nefertiti Overdrive into something I could Kickstart as a single volume, rather than hitching it up with other systems – systems that shared its DNA if not its philosophy. In my original post talking about the kernel of the idea that became Nefertiti Overdrive, I outlined what I planned to do . . . and then I quickly forgot.
You see, what I’ve been focused on are the mechanics and the intro adventure. I plan to expand the intro adventure to give a kind of outline for an ongoing campaign. In the original post, I mention a campaign building mechanic, something similar to what Jason Pitre did with Spark. Creating a process for building campaigns could certainly flesh out another 10 to 20 pages of content.
So, right now, the plan is to first Kickstart a Sword Noir short story collection, and after that to Kickstart Nefertiti Overdrive. Nefertiti Overdrive will include mechanics, an intro adventure with pre-gen characters, a campaign outline for that intro adventure, and then a system for developing your own scenarios and campaigns.
The word count aim for Nefertiti Overdrive will be 18,000. The mechanics right now stand at 5,300 words, the adventure at 2,000, the characters represent seven pages, which is essentially 2100 words for the purposes of words per page (based on a 6X9 book), and the maps represent another 900, for a grand total – right now – of 10,300. We’re 57% of the way there already. Now, I’m not going to bother getting things ready until we actually start Kickstarting, but I’m pretty certain that given my output when I’m on project of 3,000 to 5,000 words per week (depending on amount of research required), I could have the writing finished soon after the project funded (if it funds, but let’s be positive about this).
So, expect Nefertiti Overdrive to get Kickstarting at the end of this year or the beginning of the next. I’m going to have to work on a budget, which I expect to be high when compared to word count due to the large amount of art and cartography needed (at least 7 character portraits and 6 maps just for the intro adventure). Let’s hope that everyone who gets Centurion is up for backing Nefertiti Overdrive, and that they bring their friends.
