I’ve made the decision that my next Kickstarter will be a short story collection. This is kind of a jump into the abyss, given that my only Kickstarter success has been an RPG, and I have many more people interested in my RPG work than my fiction, but given that I would love to be able to get paid to write both fiction and RPGs, I’m going to see if this is a possibility.
Farewell, Something Lovely will include all my fiction in the sword noir genre. Those who have read any of my published stories, or who have read or played Sword Noir: A Role-Playing Game of Hardboiled Sword & Sorcery or one of its published adventures will have a fair understanding of what I mean by sword noir. For those that do not, here is a definition.
Characters’ morals are shifting at best and absent at worst. The atmosphere is dark and hope is frail or completely absent. Violence is deadly and fast. The characters are good at what they do, but they are specialists. Trust is the most valued of commodities—life is the cheapest. Grim leaders weave labyrinthine plots which entangle innocents. Magic exists and can be powerful, but it takes extreme dedication to learn, extorts a horrible price, and is slow to conjure.
I’m not going live with this Kickstarter until I’ve delivered on Centurion: Legionaries of Rome, but over the next few weeks, I’ll be providing previews of the stories that will be presented in this collection. Each week I’ll post the first page of one of the stories in the collection. That should give interested parties an idea of the kinds of the stories I’m asking them to support.
I’m going to be asking $3,000, slightly less than what I asked for with Centurion. I should be able to deliver Farewell, Something Lovely in a very short timeframe unless we hit a stretch goal that includes another story. However, once Farewell, Something Lovely is in the pipe, I’ll be starting another RPG Kickstarter, and that will be Nefertiti Overdrive.
I hope this interests you. Check back in for the previews.
