Here we are, well into 2019, and I’m just getting the first selection of sales data posted. The first quarter of 2019 was pretty standard. I have been slower to set up for sale items developed for Patreon, but most of them will get to sales venues. Numbers and regular releases are important for sales, and that was one of the reasons I set up my Patreon, to motivate me to get stuff into a sell-able format. So far, that’s worked relatively well.

So here we go – nothing too special and not really any messages in the numbers other than “this is what a pretty normal quarter looks like for SEP.”

And so we wrap up another year. This year was different in that I was using Patreon as a kind of goad to keep me producing. Now, it did not work as planned due to my being involved in a training program at the beginning of the year, then working on finishing my master of arts program during the rest of the year, but it did get me to produce more than I would have alternatively, and some of that made its way out as products for sale.

Below is the numbers for the third quarter – which looking back, I realize I never posted – the numbers for the last quarter, and then the number for 2018 as a whole compared to numbers form 2017, followed by the grand totals. Just a bunch of data that might be of some use to someone, somewhere.

This is a bit late, but then again I’ve got my hands full with family, school, and work – and that list is in order of priority. I’ve been pretty honest about running silent and how that’s likely to last for a while longer, and I’m not really happy about that, but I will be happy when my schooling is done and I get that piece of paper.

My neglect of both SEP and my Patreon has not helped sales numbers. Pretty sluggish, but then again, I’ve never been able to figure out what drives sales. I know regular releases help, but the slump started while I was still releasing every month, so not sure exactly what’s goin’ on.

I’ll likely never figure it out.

I used to do this a lot more often. It’s a long weekend and I’ve finished my taxes for 2017, so it seemed relevant to have a look at SEP’s sales data for the first quarter of 2018.

I think the increase is due to the regular release of products, but I could be wrong. I’m not smart with marketing and I don’t think I have enough data to really be able to figure out what’s going on, but that is the main change between the same period in 2017 and 2018.

I’ve been remiss in sharing sales data for 2017, and while a year-end round-up lacks the detail of monthly or quarterly reports, given the number of my sales this year, it seems fitting.

My sales have seen a jump in the last few months of 2017, and this I attribute to the only factor that I have reliably noted – regular releases push back catalogue sales. Since my Patreon is pushing me to produce product, that product will get released and that will drive my back catalogue. It’s not a huge leap. We’re still talking beer money here, but it’s substantial beer money.

Here we are at the outset of 2017 looking back on 2016. Last year, I did a few retrospectives of SEP in 2015, both sales data and general activities. I’m afraid I don’t have time for that, but here are the fourth quarter sales for SEP, the annual sales, and the total, all-time sales. Even with my enforced absence from game design due to enrollment in a Master’s program, there will be a release in early 2017. I’m even thinking about Kickstarting it to try to recover some of the costs upfront. It would have to be a fairly hands-off Kickstarter, and it might be interesting to see how that would pan out.

The only new product in 2016 was Starship Commandos, which was released in September and has done fine for a PDF-only release with no marketing. That was simply a game that was done that could be released fairly inexpensively. My one other game that is ready to go would need significantly more investment to bring it to market, and so that’s not going to see the light of day, possibly ever.

The release of Starship Commandos did help give SEP a bit of a push, but not too much. Sales haven’t been phenomenal for Starship Commandos, but there wasn’t much marketing behind it. That’s a real weakness for me. Not sure how to really sell my own stuff. Still, for this particular product, I felt a need to get the rules out there, and now they are, so it’s all good.
