Monthly Sales for January 2012

January was a pretty good month. It was pretty much the biggest month for SEP ever. I also was on an average of one podcast per week talking up Kiss My Axe and then – after it had been released – Suffer the Witch. This marketing, which cost me much less than other marketing I’ve done, seems to have had a fairly impressive impact. I can trace at least three sales of bundles to podcast interviews, meaning there’s likely at least another 3 – all told about 18 sales based on podcasts. That may not seem like much, but along with a new release which probably put more than a few eyeballs on our catalogue, which led to even more sales.

The numbers speak for themselves.

You can find Kiss My Axe here.

You can find Suffer the Witch here.

Monthly Sales for December 2011

Well, the year is at an end. December wasn’t too bad of a month for SEP thanks mainly to the release – late though it may have been – of Kiss My Axe: Thirteen Warriors and an Angel of Death. KMA itself didn’t perform anything near as well as Sword Noir in its first couple of weeks. This is likely in part due to being released the week before Christmas. While I actually expected less of KMA than Sword Noir, I have to admit to being a little disappointed in its performance. My interest in developing Centurion: Legionaries of Rome wanes, though I might look at putting the research to work in some other fashion. The effort to compile that research, though, is a sunk cost, and I shouldn’t let a sunk cost drive a decision.

Small note: the numbers for Sword Noir had been skewed by print copies sent out for review and those provided as comp copies. The new total is correct and reflects only those copies sold.

Time for some Axe Kissing

Are you ready for some Viking mayhem and adventure? Kiss My Axe: Thirteen Warriors and an Angel of Death is now available in PDF and Print. January of 2012 will see the release of Suffer the Witch, an adventure for Kiss My Axe.

Kiss My Axe uses the same underlying system as Sword Noir – the Sword’s Edge System – but it has been altered to provide a greater focus on combat, kind of important for Vikings.

Suffer the Witch is the one-shot used at Gen Con 2011, though updated to reflect both the experiences at Gen Con and further consideration of the scenario. If you played Suffer the Witch at Gen Con, you’ll find the establishing portion of the adventure slightly different, but the actual conflict and the characters themselves are pretty much as presented at Games on Demand in Indy.

For those of you interested, the budget for Kiss My Axe is just over $ 1,000. On the assumption that 75% of sales are PDF only and 25% are Print, I’ll need to sell 320 copies to break even (270 PDFs and 50 Print). Right now, with Sword Noir, we’ve sold 219 PDFs and 47 Print copies. Sword Noir has been out since April 2011, so that’s basically 8 months of sales. Sword Noir had a bigger budget than Kiss My Axe, but I expect to see fewer sales of Kiss My Axe. Given all that, there is some hope that Kiss My Axe will turn a profit within a year. That would be awesome.

You can find Kiss My Axe: Thirteen Warriors and an Angel of Death here.

You can find Sword Noir, the Sword’s Edge System, and other awesome Sword’s Edge Publishing products here.

November 2011 Sales

The numbers weren’t so bad this month. I had hoped to have Kiss My Axe out in November, but it was delayed. I have the final in hand, but I’m waiting for the proof copy of the print edition before I release it. Unlike Sword Noir, I want to release the PDF and print editions of Kiss My Axe simultaneously, especially since so many people request print.

Gifts of the Elder Gods was meant to be SEP’s last planned release, and was scheduled for the first quarter of 2012, but with KMA delayed, I wanted to put something out in November to keep SEP’s visibility relatively high. It may not worked out as well as I would have liked, but we’ve had good numbers for the last week in November, so it might be doing its job.

December should be interesting, with the release of Kiss My Axe. I hope it will perform as well as (or even better than) Sword Noir, but I honestly have my doubts. Since its release in April of this year, Sword Noir as earned $958 against a budget of $1350. That sounds great, except the numbers are down lower than expected (I had hoped for at least 10 sales per month). If we continue forward with only 4 sales per month, it’ll take another two years to get into the black. I had projected two years total, so that would be one third longer than anticipated to make a profit. Not good.

October’s Sales

October wasn’t much of a month for sales. The free product I released (Operation Nearscape: An Osiris File) did fine, but the point of releasing was to get feedback on it and gauge interest. I got a good review, but that’s about it. I don’t think I’ll be moving forward with the Osiris Files.

Kiss My Axe is slated for release this month, both PDF and print. That should get things moving. In December, I’ll be releasing the adventure Suffer the Witch, and then we’ve hit the end of my release queue.

What will happen after that? I don’t know. I’ve completed the first draft playtest document for Centurion: Soldiers of Rome. I might see about crowdsourcing that through Indie-A-Go-Go since Canadians can’t use Kickstarter, but we’ll see. Until Sword Noir and Kiss My Axe earn back their investments, I’m not keen on putting more money into another game, especially since my family can really use the money right now.

Sales Figures for September

As you can see from the figures below, Crossing the Millers did pretty well for its first month—and that is, of course, relative to my expectations. Please remember, when looking at those figures, that Sword’s Edge Publishing is a z-list publisher, without staff and without a marketing budget. I count more than 25 sales in the first month as a major win.

Part of the continued strong sales for Sword Noir can be attributed to releasing Crossing the Millers, as any release helps to push sales in back product. Part of it can also be attributed to the “Sword Noir bundle” I have provided over at RPG Now, in which one can purchase Sword Noir and its two existing adventures at a 17% discount on buying them separately. This may have pushed customers who were considering the purchase to actually make it.

I’d like to mention, in case you didn’t know, that anyone who purchased both Sword Noir and the Kheufer Scrolls would have received a coupon for a free copy of Crossing the Millers. If you call into this category but have not received your coupon (likely because I can’t email you through RPG Now), please drop me a line and let me know. Send along your customer number, if you can.

And for those playing along at home, we’ve cleared $ 889.91 of Sword Noir‘s $ 1338.59 cost. I expect sales to drop off dramatically in the following months, so two years to profit may not have been too pessimistic.

It is my hope that October will see the release of Kiss My Axe: Thirteen Warriors and an Angel of Death and then November will see the release of Suffer the Witch, the first Kiss My Axe adventure. That will—hopefully—help to maintain strong sales.

Fingers crossed.

August Sales

There were no new releases in August, and I think that can be seen clearly in the sales for Sword Noir. I’m not going to say that sales were bad, because before releasing Sword Noir, 13 units in a month would be a very good result. You can see, though, that other than our free rules system, Sword Noir is our biggest seller by a fair margin. My projections for Sword Noir was 10 to 15 a month, so August fit into that nicely.

Crossing the Millers has already energized sales of Sword Noir, but there are no further planned releases for Sword Noir. I might end up releasing more adventures, as I have two more adventures “plotted” out but not written. If I can avoid the use of art and cartography, I think I can make adventures profitable enough to continue releasing them, but the sales of Crossing the Millers should inform that decision. The Kheufer Scrolls had included both art and maps. Crossing the Millers has two maps and no art. If that model sells, I may continue forward with it.

Sales for July

I’m gearing up for Gen Con, so I wanted to get this out the door before I am. This month turned out pretty well, and I’m happy with the sales for The Kheufer Scrolls. It’s hard to tell, but it may have helped to push Sword Noir a bit.

Kiss My Axe should be out soon after Gen Con, followed by one-shots for both it and Sword Noir. After that, I have no plans. There are projects I might pursue, but if I do, it will be through Indie-A-Go-Go, to give me an idea of the kind of demand I can expect and front-load the costs. I’m thinking maybe a game of Roman Legionaries and possibly more short story collections. We shall see. Likely, I’ll start with a fallow period, just to centre myself for a bit.

Sales for June

July’s been pretty busy with projects and I’m afraid this posting is pretty late. June was a good month for us, and it gave me more data to see how sales for Sword Noir will pan out. So far, things are better than expected. Based on our current net revenue for Sword Noir, we might be in the black within 9 months. I originally projected two years, so that’s pretty good.

Monthly Sales for May

Although I had hoped to have something out for May, development got delayed and now I’ll be lucky to have it out for July. That would be the adventure referred to as the Kheufer Scrolls. Even if it does not sell well, it should provide SEP with at least a little visibility, which always helps sales. Sword Noir isn’t doing bad. We still have a way to go before we’re in the black with that project. Such is the way of Tier X RPG companies. 😉
